Chapter 73: Is It Because She Likes Him That She Won't Divorce?
Lu Ye glanced at her, then replied, "We're not familiar. I have no business dealings with them; we're like two wells, each minding its own water. They don't bother me, and I won't bother them."
The Lu family belonged to the aristocratic faction; once imperial relatives and nobles, they were true blue blood, inheriting both status and legitimate business from their forebears. They even responded to national calls, investing in industries beneficial to the country, and occasionally donating an aircraft carrier or two.
The Ji family, on the other hand, rose halfway through, catching the right moment when the country pushed for development. They made their fortune through underground, highly profitable ventures, becoming nouveau riche. In this circle, such a way of getting rich was looked down upon.
Jiang Sui's eyes still lingered on him, full of curiosity.
He deliberately asked, "Is there anything else you want to know?"
The implication was clear: whatever you wish to ask, I'll tell you.
Jiang Sui was indeed curious, but hearing Lu Ye's words, she thought he found her questions too many. After all, in their previous contractual marriage, Lu Ye hadn't shared anything about himself with Jiang Sui.
So she didn't push further and instead asked a harmless question, "So who's richer, you or Ji Si Chen?"
Lu Ye fell silent for a few seconds, then replied gloomily, "Me."
Jiang Sui was puzzled.
What was wrong with him now? If you're rich, you're rich—why the sulking? Why did he suddenly seem like a puffed-up river puffer, getting angry at the drop of a hat?
Lu Ye didn't drive straight back to the villa; instead, he headed towards the company. In his hurry to leave earlier, he'd forgotten some important documents there.
After their recent conversation, the two fell silent during the drive. Neither spoke a word.
It wasn't until they neared the company that Jiang Sui broke the quiet with a single sentence.
"Lu Ye, let's not get divorced, okay?"
Her gentle, soft voice carried a touch of cautious inquiry.
Lu Ye was so startled he nearly slammed the brakes. When the car finally stopped, he was still reeling.
"What did you just... say?" he asked again.
But Jiang Sui remained wrapped in her own atmosphere, softly continuing, "I've thought about it. Xuan Xuan is a little girl; she can't grow up without a mother. Even though she's not my biological child, we've developed a bond. Besides, I think you're pretty good—a suitable husband."
Handsome, wealthy, and never home—having a husband like that was as good as not having one. What could be better?
"So I thought, maybe we just shouldn’t get divorced..."
"Alright," Lu Ye replied quietly, then said, "I'll go upstairs to fetch something. Wait here for me."
With that, Lu Ye immediately opened the door and got out.
Jiang Sui murmured, "I... haven't finished yet."
She meant to say more—why not just stay married, keep things hidden, remain a couple only in appearance, neither interfering with the other's life.
But Lu Ye had already strode away, leaving her alone in the passenger seat.
"What’s he running for?" she muttered, "Is he being chased by ghosts?"
Yet outside the car, Lu Ye's heart was pounding as never before. From the moment he stepped out, he couldn't help but smile, the curve of his lips impossible to suppress. If he hadn’t left the car quickly, he feared the joy on his face would spill over entirely.
Was her last sentence... a confession?
Was it because she liked him, thought him good, and so didn’t want a divorce?
