Chapter 72: If She's So Impressive, Why Is She Acting Coy?
Although she, too, found it hard to imagine what someone like Lu Ye would sound like when cursing someone out.
“Hype! It’s all just hype!” Jiang Sui declared righteously, “My former agent was completely untrustworthy, with questionable morals, always scheming against me. All those marketing ploys were her doing! That’s why I terminated our contract—I just couldn’t stand her shameless publicity stunts! It was simply too much, completely ruining my reputation!”
After all, she and Lu Ye were at least married in the public eye.
If all that marketing was discussed openly in front of him, it would seem as if she had been unfaithful, and Lu Ye’s words left her feeling inexplicably guilty.
Lu Ye responded with a faint “Oh? Is that so?”
“Of course,” Jiang Sui insisted. “Do I seem like the type who would stoop to such low tactics?”
In truth, she wasn’t wrong on this point.
Most of her original publicity stunts had been orchestrated by Tina.
As Tina would say, even infamy was a kind of fame.
So she had been made to latch on to every trending celebrity, manufacturing gossip at every opportunity.
That was why Jiang Sui’s reputation had suffered so terribly before.
Even if she hadn’t become universally despised, her name alone was enough to elicit, “Oh, that publicity-hungry influencer? How has she not been run out of the business yet?”
Lu Ye let out a soft, dismissive snort through his nose.
Jiang Sui was speechless.
What was he snorting at? Was he angry about something? Did he think she’d been unfaithful?
“In the future, be extra careful when you go out,” Lu Ye suddenly said in a low voice. “You’re right—Ji Sicheng does have a group of people who clean up his messes. The Ji family’s connections are wide and tangled, with deep roots in many circles, including the underworld.
“In their early days, the environment was lenient, and they built their fortune through underground enterprises, picking up plenty of bad habits along the way. They’ve always behaved with complete disregard for the law, and Ji Sicheng himself is especially ruthless. It’s very likely that the people who harassed you today were acting on his orders.
“So starting tomorrow, you’d better take a few bodyguards with you when you go out.”
He paused for a couple of seconds. “I’ll have some people come over tomorrow to protect you discreetly.”
“That’s really not necessary,” Jiang Sui refused. “I’ve already called the police. I doubt he’ll dare make another move.”
Having Lu Ye send people to protect her was no different from having her every move watched.
How could she act freely under such circumstances?
Lu Ye suddenly turned to her, his lips curving into a faint, bewitching smile, a glimmer dancing in his eyes.
“You’re very clever,” he said, genuinely praising her.
He was now convinced that calling the police and everything Jiang Sui had said at the station had all been part of her plan.
Jiang Sui had always thought herself clever, but receiving such a sincere compliment from this man left her feeling a bit embarrassed.
“Ahem... Well, I really don’t need bodyguards,” she insisted. She could easily take on ten people herself—what need had she for bodyguards?
Lu Ye didn’t press the issue. “I’ll leave these people with you. Use them whenever you need. They all have special forces backgrounds—unless you’re up against professionally trained international agents, you should have nothing to worry about.”
Jiang Sui’s eyes widened in surprise.
So impressive—what was she hesitating for?
“All right,” she agreed readily. “Thank you, Mr. Lu.”
Who knew—she might really need them someday. Better to keep them handy.
Lu Ye’s brows drew together slightly at how quickly Jiang Sui’s attitude changed, and he was even more displeased at her referring to him as “Mr. Lu.”
“Are you very familiar with the Ji family? You seem to know a great deal about them,” Jiang Sui asked curiously.
After all, apart from knowing Lu Ye was wealthy, she knew next to nothing about his background. She decided to use the opportunity to dig a little deeper.
