Chapter Seventy-Seven: Did You Come to My House for Something?
“Grind the medicine into powder, dissolve it in water, and feed it to Chairman Jiang,” Cui Lin instructed as he handed the pills to the female assistant. Only then did he slowly rise to his feet, signaling for the others nearby to help Jiang Shaoxiong up so he wouldn’t have to remain lying on the floor.
He had already completed his diagnosis and provided a treatment plan, so there was no longer any need to listen to Su Zheng’s suggestion about keeping Jiang Shaoxiong on the ground.
“Hmph! Your name is Chen Muxue, isn’t it? I’ll remember you! This isn’t over. I never expected your husband to be such a person!” The female assistant ground the pills into powder herself, glaring coldly at Chen Muxue as she threatened and scolded her without the slightest restraint.
In her eyes, Su Zheng had nearly cost Chairman Jiang his life. Someone like him could never hope to receive any support from the Chamber of Commerce in the future; even ignoring him would be merciful.
Su Zheng felt a flare of anger. He had spoken up with good intentions, only to be insulted so harshly. He was about to defend himself when, to his surprise, Chen Muxue beat him to it, turning to the assistant and explaining coldly, “He only meant well and wanted to help. You misunderstood him.”
Su Zheng was taken aback, deeply moved as he looked at Chen Muxue. He had not expected her to stand up for him of her own accord.
Most importantly, when everyone else was doubting and slandering him, Chen Muxue chose to believe in him.
Even though she had been upset with him just moments before, hearing others slander Su Zheng made her withstand the immense pressure and speak up for him.
She chose to trust him.
Su Zheng’s gaze softened as he looked at Chen Muxue, and the anger in his heart gradually faded away. As long as Chen Muxue was willing to believe in him, that was enough; what others thought no longer mattered.
“Him? Help?” Ye Lang scoffed. “Heh… Those words coming from his mouth, Muxue, don’t you find it laughable? Unless I heard wrong, isn’t he known as a good-for-nothing? The kind who stays at home living off his wife?”
Ye Lang had already made some inquiries and now knew about Chen Muxue’s relationship with Su Zheng, as well as Su Zheng’s reputation as a useless man. Seeing Chen Muxue defend Su Zheng, a trace of anger flickered in Ye Lang’s eyes, turning his gaze cold and mocking.
As he finished speaking, a few snickers could be heard from the onlookers.
“It’s done! Chairman Jiang is awake!”
Soon, an excited voice burst out from the crowd, and everyone turned to look at Chairman Jiang, who had been helped to a chair.
The chairman, who had just been unconscious, slowly opened his eyes. His complexion was already regaining a healthy flush, and his breathing was becoming steadier. Supported by his assistant, he looked around in confusion.
“Amazing—one pill and he’s already better!”
“Doctors from the capital really are different. Incredible! I’m convinced!”
“Divine Physician Cui truly has skillful hands and a benevolent heart—not just skilled, but of good character!”
“In fact, we should thank Young Master Ye. There are far too few compassionate, outstanding young men like him!”
The crowd broke into lively praise for Cui Lin, and even more so for Ye Lang, not holding back their compliments.
This not only flattered the newly revived Jiang Shaoxiong, but also provided an opportunity for the crowd to win Ye Lang’s favor.
The chorus of praise filled Ye Lang with pride and satisfaction. At this moment, he felt like the star of the show once again. Even Cui Lin wore a look of smugness, though at Ye Lang’s subtle signal, he feigned modesty, smiling humbly at those around him.
“You flatter me. Any doctor would step forward in a situation like this. It’s simply what I should do.”
“And perhaps everyone here isn’t fully acquainted with Young Master Ye—he’s always been this compassionate. In the capital, he was even awarded a banner for helping others!”
Cui Lin’s words were sincere and understated, but his smile brimmed with pride, as if he could already see the brilliant future awaiting him.
After all, if he handled things well for Ye Lang, perhaps his own master would be pleased enough to pass on even more miraculous medical skills. And now that Ye Lang owed him, he’d surely gain even more private benefits.
Benefits…?
Suddenly, Cui Lin recalled the wager with Su Zheng, and his heart leapt with joy—one hundred million, earned so easily! With that thought, he no longer found Su Zheng so detestable, thinking that fool had simply come to deliver money to him on a silver platter.
“Haha… Thank you, Divine Physician Cui, for your righteous action. Young Master Ye, you truly have a magnanimous heart. Not only did you save Chairman Jiang, but you also did my Li family a great favor. I honestly don’t know how to thank you!” Li Yanze expressed, his gratitude overflowing.
“President Li, you’re too kind. It was just my duty—a mere effort,” Ye Lang replied with a light smile, though pride and exhilaration shone clearly in his expression.
He glanced sidelong at Su Zheng and spoke again, “Now that Chairman Jiang has recovered, shouldn’t we settle our account?”
“That’s right! This scoundrel slandered me just now. The wager must be honored—apologize and pay up!” Cui Lin exclaimed excitedly.
He wanted to keep talking, but Ye Lang shot him a subtle glare and smoothly took over the conversation.
“Su Zheng, is it? Originally, I didn’t want to make things difficult for you. But you repeatedly tried to interfere with Cui Lin’s treatment of Chairman Jiang and spoke out of turn. I think you’ll never learn your lesson if you aren’t taught a little humility,” Ye Lang said.
“So, you should fulfill the wager. But, so no one accuses me of bullying you, you can pay later or use something else to settle the debt. I’m very flexible.”
As he spoke, he deliberately glanced at Chen Muxue, making his intentions perfectly clear.
He was plotting to use this money to drive Su Zheng away from Chen Muxue, or perhaps even force Chen Muxue to pay the debt herself.
“But right now, you must apologize to Chairman Jiang, to me, and to Cui Lin. That’s not too much to ask, is it?” Ye Lang said with a relaxed smile, his eyes full of smugness and absolute confidence.
“That’s right! People like him need to learn a lesson so they don’t harm others next time!”
“Young Master Ye is truly broad-minded—even to such a sinister, scheming person, he shows mercy. He cares nothing for the money and asks only for an apology—what noble character!”
“What are you waiting for? Hurry up and apologize!”
“I bet he’s scared stiff! He certainly wasn’t acting so arrogant a moment ago, was he?”
With Chairman Jiang recovering, many people turned their attention to Su Zheng, waiting with interest to watch him apologize to Ye Lang in person.
Eager to please Ye Lang, they vied to humiliate and ridicule Su Zheng.
“Oh no! It’s all over!” Chen Jianguo heaved a heavy sigh, his face devoid of all hope.
He didn’t mind Su Zheng having to apologize, but the thought of producing such a massive sum was more painful than death itself.
Of course, even if it meant death, he couldn’t produce so much money!
Lv Hongmei was speechless, covering her face as she trembled, faint sobs escaping her lips.
In her view, all because of Su Zheng’s ill-timed remarks, their world had collapsed.
