Chapter 106: The Identity of Wang Qiyi
Xiao Cheng left the villa district, heading west along the only main road.
About ten minutes later, he furrowed his brow. At his pace, he should have caught up with Wang Qiyi and the others by now, yet there was still no sign of them.
However, he wasn’t worried. He pulled out his phone and dialed Yun Hongliang’s number.
The call connected quickly, and Yun Hongliang’s familiar voice came through.
“Brother Xiao, what’s the matter?” Yun Hongliang’s deep laughter conveyed genuine happiness.
“It’s like this. Could you help me track a car? A black Volkswagen, license plate Hu A23782, left the Tangchen Villas about fifteen minutes ago,” Xiao Cheng got straight to the point, skipping pleasantries.
Since Yun Hongliang’s daughter’s condition had been stabilized by Xiao Cheng, he’d been in good spirits and deeply grateful to him. Hearing the request, he replied without hesitation, “Sure, I can have the info in two minutes. Hold on!”
Though Yun Hongliang didn’t understand why Xiao Cheng needed to check on such a matter—it was against traffic police regulations—he saw no big deal and treated it as a favor.
About a minute later, Xiao Cheng’s phone vibrated. He answered.
“That car left Tangchen heading west, then turned north at the first intersection.”
Receiving this update, Xiao Cheng felt a twinge of doubt. The road north was a small path rarely used by vehicles. Why would Wang Qiyi take this route? There were many other ways north he could have chosen.
“Got it. By the way, how has Tingyu been these days?” Xiao Cheng asked as he turned his car around to head back, having missed the small intersection.
“Tingyu is stable, though she felt a bit cold last night. Should be nothing serious,” Yun Hongliang replied with a smile.
Xiao Cheng’s concern deepened. A chill was a precursor to a yin energy outbreak. He would have to find time to check on Yun Tingyu.
Though their acquaintance was casual and without blood ties, he had come to genuinely like the sweet girl. Since he had the ability to stabilize her condition, why not?
“Alright, I’ll make time to visit her.”
“Good!”
Xiao Cheng ended the call and arrived at the intersection Yun Hongliang described. The road was dusty and rarely traveled, but two clear tire tracks marked the path.
It appeared Wang Qiyi had indeed left from here. Xiao Cheng decided to get out and flag down a taxi to pursue Wang Qiyi.
He chose this method for two reasons. First, his own car was too conspicuous; he didn’t want to alert Wang Qiyi without knowing his identity. Second, the road was rough, and his Lamborghini’s low chassis might not make it through.
He handed the driver five hundred yuan. The driver didn’t hesitate, flooring the accelerator to chase after Wang Qiyi’s car. While driving, the driver said, “Little brother, you found the right man. I’m a retired racecar driver.”
But Xiao Cheng thought the speed was barely eighty miles per hour—hardly proof of a racing pedigree. Even a tractor rally driver would be faster.
Wang Qiyi had a head start of several minutes. With the delay and the driver’s modest pace, ten minutes passed without catching up.
Just as Xiao Cheng began to feel disappointed, a dilapidated building came into view.
It looked like an old staff dormitory from the 1990s, its plaster peeling and crumbling. Yet on the side wall were two glaringly out-of-place red characters: “Nine Office.”
Seeing this old building stirred something in Xiao Cheng. The two characters were cryptic, revealing nothing obvious.
He scanned the surroundings carefully and suddenly noticed a black sedan parked among thick weeds. The make was unclear, but the outline was visible only on close inspection.
The car caught Xiao Cheng’s eye. Squinting, he could just make out the numbers “82” on the rear license plate.
A faint smile crossed his lips. This had to be Wang Qiyi’s car. But why was he here?
Though he didn’t know what “Nine Office” signified, its brazen display suggested it was a government agency of some kind. Wang Qiyi, a cultivator, might have connections with certain institutions.
Xiao Cheng’s heart stirred uneasily. Wang Qiyi’s presence here spoke volumes. He longed to uncover the nature of this “Nine Office” and Wang Qiyi’s role.
With that, Xiao Cheng gently opened the car door, careful not to alert the driver, and leapt out, vanishing into the dense roadside grass.
The driver, unaware, continued talking about his racing days.
“You know Walter? I figured you wouldn’t. He’s a Formula One world champion. I raced against that guy...” The driver rambled on but soon noticed no reply. Turning around, he found the back seat empty—no sign of his passenger.
Frightened, the driver shuddered. In this desolate wilderness, could he have seen a ghost? How could someone vanish into thin air?
Terrified, he stomped the gas pedal, finally showing the speed expected of a race driver. A cloud of dust billowed as he vanished from sight.
Meanwhile, Xiao Cheng crouched in the weeds, not rushing. He suspected “Nine Office” was no ordinary place. Despite the shabby exterior, the area around the building was barren for miles.
What puzzled him was the complete lack of surveillance or security equipment.
He moved slowly through the grass, approaching the building until his divine sense could cover it entirely. Then he activated a scan.
The results startled him. No wonder the exterior was unguarded—inside were elite fighters.
Of the twenty-five occupants, only three or four lacked cultivation. Ten possessed solid, refined abilities, and one was a top-tier expert at the eighth innate stage.
Xiao Cheng wondered if even the Chu family, the most populous in Huhai, could muster such a lineup. What kind of place was this?
But now that he was here, he wouldn’t leave empty-handed. He planned to enter, learn about this organization, and uncover Wang Qiyi’s schemes.
Wang Qiyi was no simple man. He had previously made many moves against Xiao Cheng, and today’s change in demeanor meant something big involving the Xiao family was imminent. His visit to Nine Office at such a sensitive time surely indicated a special connection.
Without further thought, Xiao Cheng formed a hand seal and passed through the wall, entering the building’s interior.
