Chapter Sixty: Refusing to Go to Kindergarten
"Xuanxuan, you’re only six years old. Others may be just a little older than you. How can you call them childish?" Wan Qi Lianhao was now at a bit of a loss over his daughter's thoughts.
Xuanxuan let out a soft, cold snort.
Wan Qi Lianhao gently turned Xuanxuan’s little head to face him. "Xuanxuan, you’re still young. You need to learn and gain knowledge. How can you do that if you don’t go to school?"
"I’m not going to kindergarten," Xuanxuan replied, her eyes meeting Wan Qi Lianhao’s with earnest seriousness.
Wan Qi Lianhao sighed. Why did it feel like his daughter's rebellious phase had come so early? Wasn’t it supposed to be teenagers who were this defiant?
"No," he answered firmly. The idea of not attending school was out of the question for him.
"Lianhao," Tong Wan said, gently taking Xuanxuan from his arms. She felt her son was still too young himself, not understanding how to slowly communicate with children.
Wan Qi Lianhao simply handed Xuanxuan over, his attitude unwavering.
Xuanxuan felt a little aggrieved. For the past two months, Wan Qi Lianhao had indulged her in everything—even when it came to eating meat and gaining weight, he never scolded her. She could feel all his kindness toward her.
She had come to truly accept this father, and now she felt even more wronged.
Once Xuanxuan was in her arms, Tong Wan disapproved of her son’s sternness and rejection toward Xuanxuan.
"Tell Grandma why you don’t want to go to kindergarten?" Tong Wan stroked Xuanxuan’s head gently and asked.
Xuanxuan was quite fond of Tong Wan, her somewhat domineering but deeply caring grandmother. She always respected her. Hearing the question again, Xuanxuan pouted, repeating with a hint of grievance, "They’re just so childish."
"Grandma knows they’re childish; they are all still children. Xuanxuan, you’re very clever, but you can’t judge them by your own standards." Though surprised to hear the same answer, Tong Wan thought for a moment before gently continuing, "But Xuanxuan, you still need to go to school and learn."
Xuanxuan nodded. She knew all this. She had an adult’s mindset, even if her emotional intelligence was a bit lacking.
She also knew she needed to attend school and gain knowledge. As an alchemist, no one understood the importance of knowledge better than her.
Only through the accumulation of knowledge could one become an alchemist.
Xuanxuan was eager to learn. She had already told Zhan Yu to help her find a good school, but under no circumstances would she accept kindergarten.
"Grandma knows you’re sensible. Even if they’re childish, you still need to study. Or, if you’d like, Grandma could hire someone to teach you at home. But Grandma hopes you can make more friends and study with children your own age." Tong Wan spoke sincerely. She and Wan Qi Lianhao had discussed this matter at length.
The Wan Qi family lacked neither people nor resources. What they hoped for was that Xuanxuan would make friends at school and learn to get along with her peers.
Xuanxuan frowned. Studying was fine, but why did it have to be kindergarten?
"I’m not going to kindergarten."
Wan Qi Lianhao had thought, after hearing his mother’s words to Xuanxuan, that she would understand. He had always hoped she could leave her past behind and return to school. "Xuanxuan."
Hearing her father call her name, Xuanxuan felt even more wronged. She hadn’t finished speaking yet!
Tong Wan shot her son a glare, and only then did Wan Qi Lianhao fall silent.
"So, would you like Grandma to find a teacher to come here and teach you? Hao and Han are both at school. Do you want to stay at home alone?" Tong Wan asked.
Wait, Wan Qi Weihao and Wan Qi Weihan?
Of course! She didn’t have to go to kindergarten—she could attend school with Wan Qi Weihao! Although it was still a bit childish, when she scanned them with her spiritual sense earlier, she realized what Weihao was learning would be quite helpful to her.
If she could go to school with Weihao, she could accept that.
After all, a tall building must start with its foundation. She understood the importance of basic knowledge, and she needed more exposure to the outside world.
Attending school with Weihao and the others was the best outcome.
Her eyes brightened as she looked at Tong Wan. "I want to go to school with Brother Hao."
Tong Wan nodded, unsurprised. She had known Xuanxuan would understand. Children liked lively places, and Xuanxuan got along well with Weihao and Weihan. "Then shall Daddy take you to kindergarten tomorrow?"
"Not kindergarten." Xuanxuan felt like her grandmother and father just didn’t get it. She’d said it over and over.
Tong Wan paused. Hadn’t she just said she wanted to go to school?
Xuanxuan earnestly said to Tong Wan, "Primary school."
"Primary school?" Tong Wan asked.
Xuanxuan nodded vigorously and turned to her father. "Dad, I want to go to primary school."
Tong Wan laughed and tapped Xuanxuan’s head. "You haven’t even learned to walk, and you already want to run?"
Xuanxuan hadn’t heard this saying before, but she understood its meaning—she was being underestimated as an alchemist.
"I can write, and I can do arithmetic." Xuanxuan lifted her chin proudly. Though writing was nothing to her, the Federation’s square script was truly difficult, and now that she could write and do math, she believed her father would agree to let her attend primary school.
Tong Wan glanced at Wan Qi Lianhao, who frowned slightly and shook his head. He hadn’t taught Xuanxuan to write, and she hadn’t learned anything at kindergarten before.
"How much can you write, Xuanxuan?" Tong Wan assumed she’d picked up a little here and there from Weihao.
Xuanxuan pondered for a moment. Zhan Yu had taught her quite a bit recently—wasn’t that enough? She replied, "Almost everything."
Tong Wan set Xuanxuan on the sofa, fetched paper and pen, and placed them on the coffee table.
"Why don’t you write a few words for Grandma?"
So they didn’t believe her? Fine, she’d show them. She picked up the pen and wrote a line.
She glanced at Wan Qi Lianhao after she finished.
Wan Qi Lianhao took the paper from Xuanxuan’s hand, and his face darkened, lips twitching.
Tong Wan received the paper, and a smile played at her lips. Written on the sheet was: Wan Qi Lianhao is a bad dad.
Xuanxuan climbed into Tong Wan’s arms, ignoring her father’s stare, and wrote again on the paper: Grandma’s smile is so beautiful.
"You little rascal," Tong Wan said with a laugh, her eyes twinkling with delight.
Grandma’s smile truly was beautiful.
No wonder Wan Qi Yi, the Federation’s most infamous scoundrel, had fallen for her charms.
