Chapter 106: The Soul Singer's Power
Xuan Xuan and Lou Yitong gradually began to surpass even those in the special training class. Even Xuan Guo was left behind, her nails digging into her palms as she bit her lip and quickened her pace once more—she couldn’t let this “useless” person slip ahead of her.
If Lou Yitong hadn’t realized her own shortcomings by now, she would truly be a fool. She looked at Xuan Xuan with grateful eyes. Due to her limited spiritual power, her physical condition was poor; relying solely on herself, she would have long since been left far behind.
Xuan Xuan, however, didn’t think much of it. She simply didn’t want to be influenced by Lou Yitong’s negative emotions. But if she didn’t train Lou Yitong to restrain her spiritual power, she feared that over the next three months, those emotions would keep affecting her.
“Thank me? I’ll teach you a song—just keep singing it,” Xuan Xuan said.
Lou Yitong glanced at her in surprise. Did she not know that she possessed a special ability? And yet Xuan Xuan wanted to teach her a song? Though puzzled, Lou Yitong nodded.
“Sing it out loud,” Xuan Xuan smiled faintly, curious to see the effect. The song was one that a soul singer from the orc tribe often sang to her when she first visited the tribe.
Xuan Xuan began to sing softly, using the unique language of the orc tribe. Only this language could truly unlock the song’s full power. Lou Yitong didn’t understand the meaning, but the soul singer had a unique gift—no matter the song or language, for soul singers it was an innate instinct.
Unconsciously, Lou Yitong began to sing along with Xuan Xuan’s voice. The song was the simplest and most inspirational piece from the soul singers, filled with hopes for the road ahead, dreams for the future, and determination to strive on.
Xuan Xuan’s voice was low and gentle, while Lou Yitong’s was different—her unique tone made every syllable clear, even in the tongue-twisting language. Her low notes were delicately soothing; her high notes were passionate and uplifting.
Xuan Xuan sang a line, Lou Yitong echoed it. Xuan Xuan’s voice gradually grew softer until only Lou Yitong could hear it, but Lou Yitong’s voice remained loud, yet somehow it carried farther—everyone seemed to hear the chant deep within their souls.
Even after Xuan Xuan stopped, Lou Yitong continued to sing that strange melody over and over.
Watching her with eyes half-closed in chant, Xuan Xuan felt her spiritual power radiate outward, influencing those nearby. She couldn’t help but marvel at how talent could decide everything—just like Lou Yitong, just like Zhan Yu. Her gift was truly remarkable.
The surrounding classmates looked at Lou Yitong with a hint of astonishment. So this was the special recruit with the peculiar power? Her singing really could boost morale and strengthen abilities? Those nearby felt their energy slowly returning, the closer one was, the more profound the effect.
Everyone had just been bruised by Zhan Yu’s words, but now, through her song, they found hope and renewed determination for the future.
The song’s sound spread farther and farther, even Zhan Yu and Kuang Shao, standing in the middle of a crowd of ten thousand, exchanged glances.
“So this is the special recruit who uses her voice as her power?”
“Seems so,” Zhan Yu nodded.
Kuang Shao asked the person beside him, “Where is she now?”
“At the very front of the formation,” Kuang Chi, standing nearby, checked and replied.
“Wow,” Kuang Shao clicked his tongue. The effect carried all the way here from such a distance.
Zhan Yu was also somewhat surprised; strange things truly existed in the world.
“If this had been during ancient battles, having someone like her could sometimes turn the tide,” Kuang Shao marveled.
Zhan Yu nodded, though he lamented that her talent was wasted in the Federation.
“Looks like your plan to give these rookies a hard time today won’t work,” Kuang Shao said regretfully. He’d wanted to see these privileged youths get thrashed, as they had been in the past.
Zhan Yu shot him a glance. There were still three months—the opportunities were plenty.
He just hoped Wan Qi Xuan Xuan wouldn’t hold them back. He certainly didn’t want to send her back and then have to follow her to the Wan Qi household to keep an eye on her.
“Where’s my little junior sister? Why haven’t I seen her yet?” Kuang Shao asked. Before leaving, his father had repeatedly instructed him to take good care of her. If she suffered, she might complain to his father, and then he’d be in trouble.
Each student was equipped with a tracking system. Kuang Chi checked and said, “She’s right next to that special recruit.”
“Huh? They’re together?” Kuang Shao was puzzled.
“Yes. Miss Wan Qi Xuan Xuan seems to share a dorm with that special recruit,” Kuang Chi answered.
“Looks like she knows how to slack off?” Kuang Shao laughed, but felt relieved. No matter what, she shouldn’t suffer too much.
Thanks to Lou Yitong’s singing, the entire formation completed their tasks before nine o’clock.
Everyone looked at Zhan Yu with pride, but he didn’t glance at them again. He simply announced the dismissal.
After the formation broke up, complaints arose everywhere. Lou Yitong was quickly surrounded by admirers, and Xuan Xuan took the opportunity to slip away—she hadn’t eaten breakfast yet.
“Lou Yitong, your ability is truly amazing.”
Lou Yitong smiled shyly; she wasn’t good at socializing.
“What’s the name of that song? What language is it? None of us understand it.”
“Yes.”
“But somehow, it feels like we understand it.”
“I felt hope, felt the urge to strive—it made me feel so energized.”
“Yes, what’s the name of that song?”
Lou Yitong glanced around. Xuan Xuan was gone. The song had been taught by Xuan Xuan, but Lou Yitong didn’t know its name. Since it was given by someone else, she didn’t dare reveal it without permission.
“It was taught to me by someone else,” she replied evasively.
The crowd was somewhat disappointed by her vague answer.
“I’m leaving now,” Lou Yitong said softly, sidestepping them. She grabbed a meal from the cafeteria window and searched until she found Xuan Xuan.
Xuan Xuan was looking at her tray with disdain. Wan Qi Weihao and the others had disappeared somewhere.
The meat here was cooked so poorly—it was truly a waste.
She poked at the food in her box with a look of annoyance.
Lou Yitong noticed her sour expression but still quietly said, “Thank you.”
“For what?” Xuan Xuan waved her hand.
“I know it was you who helped me. That’s why I could run so far,” Lou Yitong said.
Xuan Xuan casually replied, “I just didn’t want your emotions to affect me.”
Lou Yitong thought Xuan Xuan was being modest, but she felt Xuan Xuan wasn’t as cold as she appeared—at least, she liked to help others.
If Xuan Xuan knew, she’d probably just say, “You’re overthinking it.”
She wasn’t that great. With so many people in the world, what was Wan Qi Xuan Xuan? How many could she possibly manage?
Lou Yitong whispered, “I won’t sing the song you taught me outside.”
She understood the song’s power.
Xuan Xuan found the people around her quite honest. She didn’t mind sharing things with others, but everyone else hid things, afraid others would find out.
She taught Lou Yitong to help her practice, to stabilize her spiritual power and abilities—otherwise, her emotions could always affect her.
“Sing it whenever you want,” she urged quickly, lest her efforts be wasted.
Lou Yitong thought Xuan Xuan was mocking her, so she shook her head hastily. “No, don’t worry, I really won’t sing it outside.”
Xuan Xuan stared at her, astonished. Which planet was this girl from? But then again, if not for this personality, she might not have such an ability. The soul singers of the orc tribe were all pure of spirit.
Only now did Xuan Xuan speak seriously. “I taught you so that you’d sing. Just don’t tell anyone it was me.”
Lou Yitong looked intently at her expression. Feeling the strong spiritual power, she believed Xuan Xuan was sincere and nodded. “I won’t tell anyone.”
They finished their meals with a hint of disdain, then assembled. Kuang Shao stood nearby, smirking at everyone. He’d feared there wouldn’t be any complaints—that would be just right.
If they didn’t complain about the food here, how could anyone stay full? If people weren’t full, how many would collapse by afternoon?
Did they think they were some noble sons and daughters?
Hmph. If they refused to eat such fine white rice, when they were truly starving, wouldn’t they eat whatever was available?
They’d eaten all sorts of things during missions.
They just needed to be properly hungry for once.
The hardships they endured here must be fully experienced again.
Zhan Yu glared darkly at the leftovers in the cafeteria and told the staff, “Cut all meals by half for this afternoon and evening.”
Kuang Shao covered his mouth to laugh. Zhan Yu was always a step more cunning than him. After this afternoon’s training, most would be starving. They’d be eager to eat more in the evening—yet the meals were halved?
Before arriving on this uninhabited planet, everyone had been thoroughly searched. Except for their clothes, no personal items were allowed.
Here, everything was military-issued and standardized.
The army wasn’t home or school—food was only provided at designated times, no snacks.
Kuang Shao was eager to see how these spoiled youths would cope.
Just as he predicted, almost no one ate enough. The training was intense, working on physical skills and military posture. Without Lou Yitong’s singing to aid recovery, nearly everyone was exhausted and starving.
On this tropical island, in the heat of September, under the blazing sun, almost everyone except Xuan Xuan and Lou Yitong was drenched in sweat.
The small amount of energy from breakfast could hardly sustain them so long.
