Chapter Fourteen: The Interview

Natsuki stood still, dragging his suitcase behind him. As he turned around, he noticed two girls approaching. Both wore the distinctive red armbands of volunteers. One had a rather plain appearance, while the other, with her neat bangs and delicate features, was shorter than Su Rouxue but still left a good impression overall.

Their enthusiastic attitude left Natsuki no choice but to respond with a polite smile and a nod.

Wanwan Lin, holding a microphone, stepped forward eagerly, her sharp gaze locking onto Natsuki the moment he appeared.

Soon, two boys carrying video cameras hurried over behind them.

“Hello, freshman!” Wanwan Lin greeted brightly, handing Natsuki the microphone.

“Hello.” Natsuki stood there, a bit dazed. He had never been interviewed before, and facing the camera, he couldn’t help feeling a little nervous.

“May I ask your name?” Wanwan’s Mandarin was clear and crisp, and her voice carried a unique charm—one could instantly tell she had some experience as a host.

“Natsuki.”

“Did you come to Yunda alone?”

“Isn’t it obvious?”

“Haha… alright, alright. So, which major are you in?”

“Electronic Information Science and Technology.”

“Wow! There’s always a handsome guy among engineering students. You look like you’re in great spirits—are you happy to be here today?”

“Yes, I am.”

“So, what are your expectations for your university life?”

“To study well…”

“Ah? You do look like someone who loves to study, but university isn’t just about studying, you know. There’s life, socializing, activities—a lot to experience.”

“Mhm.”

Wanwan Lin felt a bit awkward. Clutching the microphone, she couldn’t help but find Natsuki’s answers rather perfunctory. But as she glanced up at his clean, handsome features, her principles wavered in the face of his looks. She forced herself to push through the awkwardness, maintaining her enthusiastic smile. “So, what are your hobbies?”

“Singing, sports, writing…”

“That’s great. But a lot of guys your age love gaming—do you spend much time on games?”

“Not really. I occasionally find time to watch some of my favorite anime.”

At that, Wanwan Lin immediately found a promising topic.

“Is there any anime you’re following lately?”

“Emmm… I’ve been watching some older series. But… is it okay to mention them here?” Natsuki couldn’t help but chuckle awkwardly.

“Oh? Sounds like you’ve got something good! You have to share it with everyone.”

“Well… The Battle Under the Night Sky, and the Distorted Beauty of the Dorm…”

“Hm? That sounds familiar. Seems interesting—I’ll have to look it up when I get the chance.”

Natsuki gave an embarrassed smile. He didn’t bother to explain further; any otaku would get the reference.

“Well, that’s it for our interview. We won’t hold you up any longer. By the way, every interviewed freshman gets a welcome package from the college. Let’s exchange contacts—I’ll message you and add you to the group. This afternoon, we’ll take everyone to pick up their gifts together.”

Wanwan Lin smiled, while the other girl beside her grinned like a monkey, occasionally throwing her a meaningful glance and a thumbs-up.

Natsuki raised his brow slightly. Having just started university and knowing nothing, he sensed something off, but with the camera still trained on him, he couldn’t very well refuse her request. He took out his phone and let the senior scan his QR code.

“Natsuki—that’s a lovely name.”

Having successfully added him as a friend, Wanwan Lin was clearly delighted. She lifted her head, gazing at Natsuki’s appearance, her mood soaring beyond words.

Of course, as the interviewer, she kept her excitement in check. After all, a certain reserve was expected in front of the freshmen.

“Thank you for the compliment. Well then, senior, I’ll go check in now,” Natsuki said with a faint smile, waving goodbye to the group.

Standing there, watching his figure disappear through the campus gates, Wanwan Lin could no longer contain her excitement. “So handsome, unbelievably handsome! Thank goodness I didn’t sleep in today and got to do freshman interviews!”

“Hehe, look at you! Honestly, you could have just told him directly where to pick up the welcome package. But you had to make it a little scheme,” teased the girl beside her.

“This is a golden opportunity! What if, because of this, I finally meet a cute junior and stop being single this year? Wouldn’t that be wonderful?” Wanwan Lin boldly voiced her thoughts, a stark contrast to the reserved enthusiasm she’d shown moments before.

“Good luck to you. Who knows, maybe it’ll actually work out. Unlike me—I don’t even know if I’ll manage to have a proper relationship in college!” her companion admitted honestly. For an ordinary girl like her, finding a partner without taking initiative was truly difficult.

At least, she genuinely felt Wanwan Lin stood a chance. After all, she had the looks, a sweet voice, and a great personality—of course she’d be more popular.

“Don’t get discouraged—you might find someone before I do!”

“If only. If I really stay single all through university, I guess there’s nothing I can do about it…”
