Someone cautiously asked Jiang Yao, “Since you summoned them, shouldn’t you be able to control them?”

Having a bunch of those things staring at you with such crazed eyes was downright creepy!

Jiang Yao awkwardly tugged at the corner of her mouth. “Well... that’s hard to say.”

After all, the system had warned her that summoned creatures were uncontrollable.

Especially zombies—they had no sense of reason and couldn’t be communicated with!

In an instant, she sensed something amiss and suddenly shouted, “Damn, they’re out of control! Everyone, run!”

Everyone was stunned: What???

They thought Jiang Yao was joking until they turned to see that the zombies had indeed gone feral, hopping madly toward the crowd!

Looking back at the culprit Jiang Yao, she was running faster than a rabbit, already more than ten meters away within seconds!

“Holy crap!!!”

Everyone shared the same thought: Damn! This girl’s heartless!

A group of people took off running, having dodged zombies and now fleeing from the undead—they were utterly exhausted by the end of the day!

They scattered, each seeking shelter—some hiding in the computer room, others in the restrooms.

All because Jiang Yao had thrown out a line before running off: “If we can just stall for ten minutes, the zombies will disappear on their own!”

Jiang Yao and a few others took refuge in an electronic reading room, hastily closing the door behind them, their hearts pounding as they listened to the thudding footsteps in the corridor.

Once out of danger, they exchanged glances and couldn’t help but laugh.

Xie Huaili snorted, looking pointedly at Jiang Yao. “You’d better not misuse that skill again!”

Jiang Yao felt a pang of guilt but forced herself to stay calm. “It was just an accident! Besides, didn’t the zombies I summoned drive off the other zombies?”

Back on topic, now safe for the moment, the group began discussing the real culprit.

“What do you think that thing actually is? It’s got us completely fooled!”

Jiang Yao pondered briefly before sharing her theory. “I think there might be a high-level zombie hidden somewhere in the library.”

“A high-level zombie?!”

Everyone’s attention snapped to that phrase.

Xie Huaili’s expression turned serious. “Explain.”

Jiang Yao, surprised they hadn’t heard of high-level zombies, carefully explained: “Ordinary zombies are the kind we usually see—slow, dumb, and easier to handle. Killing one grants +10 points. As for high-level zombies...”

“When Yuan Yuan and I escaped from the girls’ dorm, we ran into one,” Ji Yuanyuan chimed in, suddenly enlightened.

“Yes, yes! It was the dorm supervisor who had already turned into a zombie! The system said killing a first-stage zombie gave us a whopping 40 points!”

Xie Huaili pressed the key question: “What’s the difference between ordinary and high-level zombies?”

Jiang Yao frowned. “From my perspective, high-level zombies move faster, are smarter, and stronger!”

Dou Zimo sighed bitterly. “Zombies can evolve? That’s terrible news.”

Jiang Yao shook her head. “Not just zombies—mutations have also occurred in animals and plants, and they actively attack humans. You might not have noticed while trapped in the library.”

Her words fell into silence once more.

“Hey, why the long faces?” Ji Yuanyuan rubbed her arms, feeling uneasy. “Look on the bright side—we’ve all awakened supernatural powers. If this were a novel, we’d be the protagonists!”

Xiang Yu smiled faintly. “Yuan Yuan’s right. Isn’t this like a protagonist’s special ability?”

“Definitely!” others perked up. “Whatever, we’ve got one life to live! Let’s kill as many zombies as we can and earn points!”

“That’s right! We’re all the main characters here!”

Their excitement, however, attracted zombies outside, who began clawing and scratching at the door.

Their enthusiasm faltered; voices quieted.

“If what you say is true, that high-level zombie has spatial powers and some intelligence. It won’t let us find it so easily,” Xie Huaili analyzed thoughtfully.

The others nodded in agreement.

Jiang Yao pulled out her compass to examine it carefully. “I’m certain it’s on this floor. But if it wants to stay hidden, the best way...”

She suddenly looked up.

Everyone spoke at once: “Hiding among the zombies?”

Ji Yuanyuan’s eyes lit up. “In the sewers?”

“...”

All eyes turned to her. Ji Yuanyuan opened her mouth. “I think my guess makes sense! Why can’t it hide in the sewers?”

“Sis, how could such a huge zombie fit into a sewer?” Dou Zimo asked earnestly, eyes full of curiosity.

Xiang Yu’s lips twitched in amusement.

Ji Yuanyuan defiantly argued, “Sadako emerged from a TV! Why can’t a zombie? You’re speciesist!”

“...”

What does speciesism have to do with this?

Now that they had a target, the next step was to lure all the zombies on this floor together.

They weren’t afraid that the high-level zombie wouldn’t appear—if all the others were drawn in and it remained indifferent, it would be suspiciously out of place, saving them trouble in checking every zombie.

The group huddled to devise a rough plan. After ten minutes passed and the zombies outside disappeared, they cautiously opened the door and stepped into the corridor.

Meanwhile, others pressed their ears against the door to listen.

“Seems quiet? Did the zombies vanish?”

“Looks like it. Let’s wait a few more minutes...”

Out of caution, no one opened the door immediately.

Suddenly, a cheer echoed down the corridor:

“Hello, friends on the left!”

“Can you hear me down below?”

Everyone: ???

Who the hell is suicidal?

Shouting now will only attract zombies!

They grumbled but all listened carefully.

“I’m Huo Xiuqi from the Journalism Department, and together with Ji Yuanyuan from the Music School, we bring you a song called ‘When’!”

Everyone: …Not the crazy guy again! What are you trying to do?

At a life-or-death moment, you’re holding a concert?

But it wasn’t just talk—the sweet violin music began, and the duet echoed through the corridor—

“Ah~ ah~ ahhhhhhh~”

“When mountains lose their edges, when rivers cease to flow...”

Huo Xiuqi stood on a makeshift stage of chairs, singing and hyping the crowd. “All you singers out there, sing loudly with me!”

Ji Yuanyuan, nervously clutching her violin bow, shivered and glanced at the entranced boy.

No way—he’s genuinely into it!

As a music student, she felt ashamed to be outdone by a journalism major and played her violin even harder.

Finally, a classmate, fed up, cautiously cracked the door open: “Huo, seriously? You want to die tomorrow or what?”

“We all know the pressure’s high, but if you die, how are the rest of us supposed to live?”

Some zombies heard the noise and came running excitedly. Huo Xiuqi, even more energized, waved at them enthusiastically. “Dear audience, are you moved by my song?”

The zombies responded excitedly, trying to climb the chairs. Ji Yuanyuan kicked one down, terrified, but kept playing flawlessly.

Huo Xiuqi clung to his pants, dodging zombie claws. Luckily, the furniture was stacked high enough that the zombies couldn’t climb up quick enough.

“Dear audience, I appreciate your enthusiasm, but please follow the rules! Don’t... don’t tug my pants!”

Everyone: …

It’s over—they’ve officially lost it.

More zombies gathered, and everyone concluded these two had given up on life and wanted a grand finale.

For a moment, spirits sank, uncertainty about the future creeping in.

Until the song reached its climax—

“Let us roam the world freely, galloping through life’s splendor...”

Memories long dead stirred anew, filling everyone’s hearts with a tragic resolve. From different corners came fragmented voices, some sorrowful, some passionate.

“Raise your glass in song, seize youth with all your might!”

Like tiny streams converging into a vast ocean, all the surviving students in the library joined in. Every word was a defiance of fate.

Outside the library, a classmate wiped tears from the corner of their eye, moved. “This is youth! But why suddenly a big sing-along? Getting sentimental before the end?”

“So inspiring! Everyone, fight to survive!!!”

...

Inside, none heard the encouragement. Ji Yuanyuan stared at the dense horde of zombies, her vision darkening.

This is way too intense.

She felt she might only live to twenty-two!

At the same time, Jiang Yao quietly observed the zombie crowd.

Looking over the sea of pale, ugly faces, nothing seemed particularly unusual.

She pressed her temple and made a gesture to the people behind her.

Wu Jing from the Chemistry Department immediately hurled several Molotov cocktails into the zombie mass.

The system store sold Molotovs at a high price, but Wu Jing had used points to buy materials and made them herself. Though crude, the effect was obvious.

The zombies shrieked as flames caught them, wildly thrashing about like headless flies.

These low-intelligence zombies didn’t know to dodge, bumping into each other, burning one another.

Just then, Jiang Yao noticed a zombie deliberately avoiding the throng, slowly retreating.

It was a female zombie, hair draped over her shoulders, face pale but comparatively delicate and clean-looking next to the grotesque others. Even her clothes were neat.

Jiang Yao’s eyes hardened, a faint smile curling her lips:

“Finally found you.”
