Chapter 10: Never to Meet Again

I gave a bitter smile.
The last trace of love in my heart vanished without a trace.
“Fine!”
As always, I nodded in agreement. And she... left without mercy, pushing open the door and walking away.
For a long while afterward, she never showed herself, staying day and night by Ning Yuanzhou’s side.
Perhaps that was for the best.
It suited the words “divorce cooling-off period” all the more.
Soon, the month came to an end, and the day of my departure arrived.
That morning, I washed and groomed myself carefully, then prepared a sumptuous breakfast for myself in this home.
I ate alone and washed the dishes alone.
Then I tidied up the rooms.
After five years, this home felt more like mine than anyone else’s.
Though I no longer had feelings for Liu Zhuyin, I still cared about this place.
It was simply about to welcome a new master.
I would become a thing of the past.
After packing my suitcase, I placed the divorce agreement on the table.
I was just about to leave when Liu Zhuyin called.
I hesitated for a moment, then answered.
“I’ll be home later.”
“Wait for me at home. Don’t go anywhere. I’ll be there by noon.”
“Is something important?”
I asked, and Liu Zhuyin stammered out an apology.

“About what happened last time... I’m very sorry.”
“I shouldn’t have abandoned you like that, but I... I was really worried about A-Zhou. I’m sorry.”
“I’ve prepared a gift for you as an apology. You’ll accept it, won’t you?”
She was actually apologizing to me. I was overwhelmed by the unexpected kindness.
She had even bought me a gift. It felt like a dream.
And yet, my chest felt even tighter.
Her first apology. The first gift she had ever bought me...
But it was only... to make amends.
To make up for caring for Ning Yuanzhou day and night while neglecting me.
I did not want such a gift.
“Hello? Did you hear what I said?”
“Mm. I’m listening.”
Liu Zhuyin did not notice the change in my tone or the coldness in my voice.
“Good. Then wait for me at home.”
After hanging up, I shook my head with a smile.
I sat at the table and waited for her.
For five years, I had done whatever she asked.
I did not mind doing so one last time.
The minutes passed, one after another.
Soon, it was well past eleven.
She still had not returned.
I continued waiting.
This was the last time I would show her leniency.
And the last time I would indulge her.

When I saw the minute hand reach twelve, I slowly rose to my feet.
At that moment, she called. I answered anyway.
“I’m sorry. A-Zhou isn’t feeling well, so I... I may be late getting home.”
“All right.”
I smiled faintly.
Even though this was the first time she had ever arranged to meet me, the first time she had ever brought me a gift, the first time she had ever apologized...
She had still broken her promise.
Just then, the hospital called.
“Mr. Gu, today is the day you signed up to donate your organs without compensation. If anything has changed, you can tell me—”
“Nothing has changed. I’ll be there shortly.”
There was a brief silence on the other end, followed by a sigh.
“Mr. Gu, organ donation is a serious matter. I still think you should explain everything clearly to your wife. Otherwise...”
I laughed. “Don’t worry. I’m already divorced. What I do has nothing to do with her...”
After hanging up, I picked up my suitcase and took one last look at this home.
Five years had passed in the blink of an eye.
I had repaid the Liu family for all they had done for me.
I had also given Liu Zhuyin my whole heart.
I had no regrets.
For the rest of our lives, everything concerning Liu Zhuyin would have nothing to do with me.
I turned and walked away, never looking back.
