Lie Chang’an was thus firmly compelled to remain behind. After he regained consciousness, Guli immediately sent for Imperial Physician Hu.

Fortunately, Imperial Physician Hu reported that the fever had subsided and his condition was not serious. However, the wounds still required daily dressing and medication to prevent infection and a recurring fever.

The doctor also provided several medicinal herbs for Xiao Qiu and the others to decoct, instructing that he take the concoction daily.

At last, Guli felt relieved. As long as Lie Chang’an woke up, the fever receded, and the external injuries healed over time, everything would be fine.

After the doctor left, Guli dispatched messengers to inform the Crown Prince. Since the Crown Prince had been a great help, she wanted to share the good news with him immediately.

True to form, the Crown Prince arrived at Guli’s main hall not long after receiving the news.

During this period, the Crown Prince dared not come to Yunyan Palace frequently, fearing suspicion from the Empress Dowager. When he did come, he stayed only briefly. Though he knew Lie Chang’an’s condition had improved, the continued unconsciousness still worried him deeply.

He could not enter the side hall to visit, as Yunyan Palace was full of people and prying eyes, so he exercised the utmost caution.

Yet he never expected Lie Chang’an to awaken so suddenly—truly a joyous surprise.

The Crown Prince came to the main hall at Guli’s residence, explaining that an important treasure was missing and wanted to see if it was among the boxes of gifts he had previously chosen for her.

Guli, playing along, allowed the Crown Prince to lead his men into the side hall to search.

He took Xiao Jizi with him, instructing him to wait outside while he strode inside alone.

Today, Lie Chang’an had already taken his medicine under Guli’s careful care. He was uncomfortable with her hands-on attentiveness, feeling both guilty and pained, yet unable to refuse her kindness, he had to accept it helplessly.

To keep him from boredom, Guli handed him the unfinished manuscript they had been reading earlier to pass the time.

Hearing the noise, Lie Chang’an raised his head and saw the Crown Prince enter. He immediately sat up straight, preparing to stand and bow. The Crown Prince quickly stepped forward and gently supported him, saying, "You just woke up, and your wounds aren’t fully healed yet. There’s no need to be so formal."

Lie Chang’an knew that the Crown Prince had played a great part in his survival. Though he did not perform a formal bow, he clasped his fists respectfully and expressed his gratitude, "Thank you, Your Highness."

The Crown Prince nodded with relief, "Seeing you awake makes me feel much better."

Their safety was the greatest blessing.

Maintaining his fist-clasped posture, Lie Chang’an said, "I am fortunate to have survived thanks to the care and grace of Your Highness and the Princess. I have no way to repay you but will dedicate myself even more to protecting both Your Highness and the Princess from now on."

"I only did a small favor. You should really thank Guli—she has suffered greatly for you these past days."

Lie Chang’an understood well, managing a bittersweet smile, overwhelmed by an indescribable mix of gratitude and quiet joy.

He nodded solemnly, his voice resolute, "Yes, I will always remember the Princess’s devoted care for me."

His thoughts lingered on his grandmother and his comrades in the barracks, and naturally, he could not help but ask the Crown Prince about them.

The Crown Prince smiled, "Rest assured, I sent someone to report to the Lie household, saying you are fine without revealing your serious illness. I believe your grandmother’s health is stable. As for the military affairs, your duties have been handled by Deputy General Qi in your absence, and nothing serious has occurred. You have nothing to worry about."

Hearing this, Lie Chang’an felt a great weight lifted from his heart, relaxing completely as he smiled sincerely and thanked him, "Thank you, Your Highness, for your concern and for arranging everything for me."

"It’s nothing worth mentioning. As for Father Emperor, I concealed the matter for you, saying that you have already been sent home, your body mostly well except for serious external injuries and fatigue, and need to rest at home for a while. The Emperor has agreed, so you can stay here a few more days to fully recover without worry."

With the Crown Prince’s assurances so clear, Lie Chang’an naturally could not decline and nodded in agreement.
